Veiga Heads to Juventus: Chelsea Youngster Seeks Regular Playing Time Ahead of World Cup

Chelsea have agreed to send Portuguese youngster Renato Veiga on loan to Italian giants Juventus, with the 21-year-old seeking regular playing time to boost his chances of featuring in the 2026 World Cup.

Veiga, who joined Chelsea from Basel in the summer for £12million, has found himself on the fringes of the first team at Stamford Bridge. With limited opportunities in the Premier League, the defender has been restricted to cup competitions, where he has been a regular feature.

The loan move to Juventus, which does not include an option to buy, is believed to have been motivated by Veiga’s desire to play in his preferred position at centre back. The Portuguese starlet is eager to impress national team coach Roberto Martinez and secure a spot in Portugal’s 2026 World Cup squad.

Chelsea are expected to receive a loan fee of around £4million from Juventus, which will help to offset the costs of Veiga’s temporary departure. However, the Blues’ decision to let Veiga leave may raise eyebrows, given the club’s current midfield injury crisis.

With Romeo Lavia and Enzo Fernandez currently sidelined, Chelsea are short on midfield options. The Blues’ last match against Wolves saw Moises Caicedo and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall start in midfield, with no backup options on the substitutes’ bench.

Chelsea are reportedly considering strengthening their midfield options in the transfer market, but for now, Veiga’s departure has left the club with a further selection headache. The Blues face a tough test against Manchester City in the Premier League on Saturday, and Enzo Maresca will be hoping that his team can cope with the absence of Veiga and other injured midfielders.
