Chelsea’s injury woes show no signs of abating, with Romeo Lavia and Wesley Fofana among the key players currently sidelined. As the Blues prepare to face West Ham on the final day of the January transfer window, manager Enzo Maresca will be hoping for some positive news on the injury front.
Lavia, who has been plagued by injuries since joining Chelsea from Southampton, is facing another extended spell on the sidelines. The midfielder picked up a muscle injury against Bournemouth and was unable to train ahead of the trip to Manchester City. Maresca has confirmed that Lavia will be out for at least a few weeks, but a more specific return date has yet to be confirmed.
In more positive news, Fofana has stepped up his rehabilitation and is now participating in running drills on grass. The centre-back has been sidelined for over a month with a thigh problem, but Chelsea are keen not to rush his return. Maresca has praised Fofana’s progress, saying: “Wes is a huge loss… He will be back and he will be good in the way he was before he was injured.”

Chelsea’s defensive injury crisis also extends to Benoit Badiashile, who is expected to be out until at least February with a thigh problem. Meanwhile, Carney Chukwuemeka remains sidelined with a virus, and Omari Kellyman is still recovering from a thigh injury picked up in September.
As the January transfer window draws to a close, Chelsea’s injury woes will undoubtedly be a major consideration for Maresca and the club’s recruitment team. With several key players still sidelined, the Blues will be hoping to bring in some reinforcements to bolster their squad for the remainder of the season.
