AC Milan’s deadline-day swoop for Chelsea’s Joao Felix has been hailed as a major coup for the Rossoneri, but the deal comes with a significant caveat: there is no option to make the move permanent. Felix, who joined Milan on loan until the end of the season, will bolster the team’s attacking options, but the club’s financial constraints meant that negotiating a permanent transfer was never a realistic possibility.
As reported by Gazzetta, Chelsea’s hefty €52m outlay to sign Felix from Atletico Madrid last summer meant that the Blues’ valuation of the player was prohibitively expensive for Milan. With the Italian giants already stretching their financial resources to secure Felix’s loan deal, there was little scope for negotiating a permanent transfer.
The loan agreement itself is a complex one, with Milan paying €2m upfront plus €2.5m in add-ons tied to the team’s performance in the Champions League and other competitions. The Rossoneri will also cover Felix’s salary until the end of the campaign.
Felix’s arrival at Milan is a significant boost to the team’s attacking options, particularly given his impressive record at Chelsea, where he scored seven goals and provided two assists in 20 appearances. While a permanent move may be off the table, Milan fans will be hoping that Felix can make a meaningful impact during his time at the San Siro.
